As you may have read elsewhere, I officially got on the bus this year, and lately I've been pursuing digital copies of Grateful Dead recordings based on the famous Betty Boards, the nickname for recordings engineering by the brilliant and often under-appreciated Betty Cantor-Jackson.
If you don't know about them, there's a lot to read (The New Yorker; Relix Magazine: 2014 and 2017) about the extraordinary story of these tapes that were lost for decades, found, restored, and in some cases, turned into official Grateful Dead releases.
Here I will assemble and curate a list of known recordings and where to find them. I will include links to known Betty Board instances in Archive.org's Grateful Dead Collection which is mirrored at Relisten.net and in the Relisten mobile app. (iOS | Android). I will also, where relevant, include links to Wikipedia articles about commercial releases, and sometimes to links on Apple Music or YouTube. Later I may add other kinds of links, such as links to the eTree database of each recording or trading sites where they may be found, and so on.
I started working on the document on Nov. 17, 2023, and obviously, it will be incomplete for a while. Over time, as more recordings may come to light through restoration and commercial release I'll add them. At first, it will focus primarily on The Grateful Dead. Over time I will add links and references concerning Betty's recordings of other acts, starting with Jerry Garcia.
Why am I doing this? Because a list like this doesn't appear to exist.
Of course, please leave comments to let me know where this list is deficient, and as I'm not yet fully fluent in tape-trading lingo and naming conventions, any good-faith help and critiques here will be accepted and appreciated.
Update, 27 May 2024: I've reached the stage in my fandom where I'm spending as much time listening to the various acts that Jerry Garcia convened in between his tours with the Dead in the early 70s and into the 90s. These include his performances with Merl Saunders, the short-lived Legion of Mary, and the Jerry Garcia Band. Many of these live mid-70s performances were captured by Betty too, and are listed in a new below.
Additionally, I've been told by no less an authority than Charlie Miller himself, that Betty was responsible for essentially all of the Dead's soundboard recordings from late 1970 through about 1979, with the exception of the fall '76 tour. I'll be adding information about those shows but labeling them "Likely Betty."
