Will Netcom get the "death penalty"?
Sometime Monday night, users of Netcom, an international Internet service
provider, may find their postings to Usenet newsgroups going nowhere.
The service is facing a sanction known as a Usenet death penalty for
allowing its users to post thousands of duplicate messages to newsgroups,
one of many forms of spam. If the death penalty is enacted, it would be the
second major service provider punished. UUNET Technologies suffered a
similar action over the summer.
On Friday, it seemed Netcom would avoid the death penalty

but on Monday, the sentence was carried out.

Usenet: The unsung side of the Internet
|
 |
| | (NCN Illus.) |
If you're new to the Internet, it's likely that you've never heard of Usenet. But the
thousands of online forums devoted to nearly every topic imaginable has
grown exponentially since its birth in 1979, with no signs of slowing. Today,
millions of Internet users ask questions, get help with problems, debate important and not-so-important issues,
and trade pictures and sound files within the hierarchical Usenet community.
It isn't always pretty, it isn't always friendly, but it can
be ... interesting.
